Every year, Illinois hospitals and health systems generate $135.5 million in economic activity statewide that helps grow and strengthen communities. They support working families through 521,000 good-paying jobs and local businesses through spending on supplies, services, and capital projects. Communities win when local hospitals are strong—yet many Illinois hospitals are struggling to survive, with rising costs and federal policy changes H.R. 1 as major factors.

Illinois’ 85 small and rural hospitals account for 38% of all hospitals in the state and contribute over $21 billion annually to the economy. With distinct characteristics from their urban counterparts, small and rural hospitals provide essential, lifesaving care to 1.6 million rural residents. Nearly 98% of these hospitals have fewer than 150 beds and 66% are Critical Access Hospitals.

Patients in Illinois’ most vulnerable communities have benefited greatly from the federal 340B program. The program has been key to expanding access to essential healthcare services and lifesaving medications. Yet recent pharmaceutical company restrictions prevent hospitals from best serving their patients. House Bill 2371 SA2 protects 340B and its positive impact on individual lives. With federal Medicaid cuts looming, passing HB 2371 SA2 is needed now more than ever.
